Bruno Mars Frank About Girls And His Wild Drug History (2013)

You already sold millions of albums, did you expect being so successful?
No, on the contrary, I got rejected for years. Not a single record company wanted me, because they didn’t know in which box they should put me in: R&B, Reggae, Rock, Pop, Urban… My first label dumped me because they didn’t found songwriters who suited me. Finally, I decided to write my own songs. I already could play the guitar, so I just went for it.

Did you had some other jobs in the meanwhile?
I sold insurances for a while and it suited me very well, because I had a big mouth. But I didn’t liked it at all and I just did it so I could pay the rent and I didn’t ended up on the street.

Did that happen?
Almost. At my lowest point I had to sell all my instruments, because I couldn’t pay my house anymore and my phone got disconnected. Having a distance from your guitar and drum is the most terrible thing that could happen as a musician.

When did the big reversal came?
I started producing and writing songs for other people, and that’s how I got discovered. My first two singles ‘Nothin’ On You’ and ‘Billionaire’ were two big hits immediate and before I even mentioned it, I was famous all over the world.

How did it feel to become suddenly so famous?
Very weird, I came on places where I even never heard from before en seemed like they all could sing my songs along with me. Even if they didn’t spoke English! I didn’t realized what happened to me.

And then it all went wrong and you got caught in Las Vegas for using coke…
Yes, very stupid from me. That incident is still following me till today. I can work as hard as I want and bring out ten beautiful singles, my using of drugs is something people will remember of me. And that’s terribly. I want to continue with my life, forget what happened that day and show it’s just all about music.

What went wrong that night?
I was a dumbass who wasn’t thinking. My album was at number one and that success kinda raised to my head. I drank too much that night and what happened next, I can’t really remember. It was the first time I got in touch with drugs. I don’t really understand why I did it and how I got it. When I got caught, I realized what the consequences would be. Fortunately, I came away from it with a community service and a fine.

After that you were completely healed from the drugs?
Absolutely, I was living a good life. I also don’t give wild parties at home. When I finished work, I watch some television or I go to bed. Or I play with my dog Geronimo, a rottweiler.

And you make yourself comfortable with your girlfriend…
Yes, indeed, I have a really beautiful girlfriend (the model Jessica Caban), and I’m very fond of her.

Were you a player before you had a relationship?
No, I treated girls with a lot of respect. I think that every girl is special, and the boys who can’t see that are losers. All my songs are about girls, they make my life more beautiful.

What kind of boy were you at school?
I was somebody who absolutely didn’t loved school. I was an Elvis-impersonator and every day I counted down till I could go on stage again. Why should I teach everything about Columbus if I knew I would be a musician? Sometimes, I felt like Batman: at day I was Peter -my real name- and I played softball with friends at school. But at night I changed in the artist Bruno and I sang as the youngest Elvis-impersonator.

You spent your childhood in Hawaii. Do you remember the first time you went to America?
Yes, it was really weird. I had a culture shock. It was very busy and there were billboards everywhere. Totally different as the life in Hawaii. It gave me tintels and it took a long time before I got used to it.

You never desired to go back to your tropical island?
I miss the beaches, but my life is here now. Maybe I’ll go back later when I’m old. Than I can drink cocojuice on the beach and watch the ocean, while I will muse about a comeback with my thick paunch, hahaha.

Writing songs looks very simple for you. Is it that simple?
No, writing a good song is the hardest thing to do. I’m never happy, and a song not has to be good, but great with me.

When is a song great?
The song has to hypnotize me in the first 3 seconds and give me a feeling I never felt before. And after that it should be feeling like a slap in my face. Songs like ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen, ‘Billie Jean’ by Michael Jackson and ‘Smells Like Team Spirit’ by Nirvana, that are really good songs.

A lot of your colleagues also are going to act or they start a fashion line. You see yourself doing that?
No, because I think you should stay faithful to your passion. Artists are with their heads in the clouds very ghastly and they want it all. I would feel like a slut if I’d be infidelity to my music. This is my dream and I want to focus to keep it special.

What is the weirdest place you heard your own music?
In a strip club! I went out with my band while we were on tour and we got into this really strange club. Suddenly someone screamed ‘Ladies and gentlemen, Bruno Mars is here!’ And next, a girl started an act on my song ‘Just The Way You Are’. She felt really embarrassed and me even more!

You already worked with a lot of artists. You still have some dreams?
Oh yes, I like a lot of artists: Kayne West, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Kings Of Leon, Mumford & Sons. I’d like to make music with them. And I promise I will surprise everyone, because you haven’t seen the half of Bruno Mars yet!
